Museums & Art Galleries
Birmingham is home to many top class museums and art galleries.
Sweet tooths can experience the chocolate delights of Cadbury World , the underwater wonderland of the National Sealife Centre Birmingham – the UK’s first and largest inland aquarium, and the newest attraction, Thinktank, Birmingham’s Museum of Science and Discovery.
If you are an art lover, spend your spare time in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The collections cover fine art and applied arts, as well as local and industrial history. There is an ever-changing programme of temporary exhibitions and its permanent collection includes works by the famous pre-Raphaelites.
There is also an eclectic mix of art elsewhere on offer in the city, from contemporary works at the Ikon Gallery and Waterhall Gallery of Modern Art, to outstanding collections at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.
Shopping
Birmingham is a shopper’s paradise, with restored arcades, modern malls and markets, boutiques and high street stores. The combination of pedestrian friendly streets and relaxed environment makes shopping in Birmingham a hugely enjoyable experience.
Europe's newest shopping destination, Bullring, can be found in the heart of Birmingham. At one end is the architecturally stunning Selfridges. At the other, a new style Debenhams. And in between are over 140 exciting shops - many of them new to Birmingham.
Elite designer shops such as DKNY, Hugo Boss and Armani can be found in The Mailbox. In addition to the individual designer boutiques is Harvey Nichols plus a number of bars, cafes and restaurants, which complete the dynamic leisure and retail development.
The city centre also boasts City Plaza, the Pallasades and Pavilion Central – all fantastic shopping malls. Plus there are also some amazing department stores where you can spend your cash, including Beatties and House of Fraser.
Birmingham has a long-standing tradition for its markets, which have been held in the city since 1166. Specialist Markets are also held in the city, including the Antiques Market in the Jewellery Quarter and the Farmer's Market held in the city centre.
Gardens & Historic Houses
Did you know that there are more acres of park and open spaces in Birmingham than any other city in the UK? And few European cities can match Birmingham as a “green” city. There are 8,000 acres of parks and public open spaces including Sutton Park, the largest urban nature reserve in Europe.
Why not take a trip to the Botanical Gardens with acres of gardens and impressive glasshouses? Other stunning horticultural delights can be enjoyed at the Winterbourne Botanical Garden and Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens. These are home to a number of special events and courses throughout the year.
The city is steeped in history and heritage. It boasts a wealth of historic sites including Aston Hall, one of England’s finest Jacobean Mansions; Soho House, which is the former home of the 18th Century novelist and entrepreneur Matthew Boulton; Sarehole Mill, with its Tolkien Literary connections and the world famous Jewellery Quarter. Blakesley Hall is an interesting grade II listed Elizabethan farmhouse.
Arts & Culture
Birmingham is an inspiring city for art lovers. Many of the city's squares and open spaces are graced with public art.
