Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, is famous for its culture, architecture, and design. This is Scotland with style. Your encounter with the city’s people will be your most cherished experience. The great warm-heartedness that already greets you in Edinburgh will be even greater in Glasgow!

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

What Gaudi is to Barcelona – Charles Rennie Mackintosh is to Glasgow. Born in 1868, this eminent architect, designer and artist is celebrated around the world today as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the period which spans from mid 1890s to the late 1920s. Most of his surviving work can be found in or around Glasgow and it is as attractive today as it was breathtaking to those at the time.

Mackintosh took his inspiration from Scottish traditions and blended them with the flourish of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Japanese forms.

He was part of an artistic group called “The Four” and he and these designers collectively created what is now known as “The Glasgow Style”.

City of Style

At the beginning of the 1990s, Glasgow celebrated its status as European 'City of Culture'. In 1999, its dazzling architecture won it the accolade of 'UK City of Architecture and Design'. Since then, the city has gone from strength to strength. If its culture, entertainment, good food and an all-day shopping experience you are after, a great time is guaranteed.

Glasgow is home to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Shops range from High Street chains to the exclusive chic boutiques. Wander down the pedestrian shopping zones on Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyll Street, or the covered malls like Buchanan Galleries and the St. Enoch.

Princes Square oozes exclusivity, with its glass-roofed airy ambience. The nearby Italian Centre is a parade of top fashion and designer labels.

In between lies the Merchant City, trading on its solid reputation for innovative retailing, while its bars and cafes earn its description as the city's 'Left Bank'. At the other end of the shopping scale, the Barras offers the flea-market experience, with the chance of a bargain always at the next stall.

Eating your way round Glasgow is going to take time. Look at any listing of bars, bistros and brasseries at the informal end of the eating spectrum and you’ll find pages and pages to choose from. Glasgow's restaurants offer the best in international cuisine.

Style also apparent in the friendly, engaging nature of the Glaswegian people

Museums & galleries

Do you love museums? Then your only problem in Glasgow will be in choosing which one to visit next. The Burrell Collection is home to the private collection of millionaire shipping owner Sir William Burrell. Here you’ll find 8,000 exhibits of valuable art of all types from across the world. The building is beautifully set in picturesque Pollok Country Park. As with most of these museums there is no entry charge. In the Peoples Palace you’ll discover everything about the city, the Glaswegians, and their influence on the rest of the world from the 12th century to the present day – it is both fascinating and informative.
